Keeping your ring or band synced
Your Oura ring and WHOOP band have no internet connection of their own — they reach us through your phone. These three settings let that happen in the background, so you don’t have to remember to open anything.
- Leave the device’s own app running. Don’t swipe it closed from your recent apps. On an iPhone, closing it that way stops it talking to your ring or band until you open it again.
- Turn on Background App Refresh. On iPhone: Settings › General › Background App Refresh, then switch on Oura or WHOOP. On Android: Settings › Apps, pick the app, then allow background activity and set battery use to unrestricted.
- Keep Bluetooth on. That’s the only way the device reaches your phone.
A ring or band is too small to hold a WiFi radio and a battery to run it,
so it stores readings until your phone is nearby and hands them over by Bluetooth. Your phone
then passes them to Oura or WHOOP, and we collect them from there. With the settings above,
all of that happens on its own during the day. Without them, your phone holds the data back
until you next open the app — which is why a number here can lag behind what your device
already knows.
A Withings scale is different: it has WiFi and sends readings the moment you step off, which
is why your weight appears here almost immediately.
If a number still looks behind, open the device’s own app, wait for it to finish
syncing, then use Sync now below.
